How To Make Your Home Feel Like A Tropical Oasis With “TRAVEL” Plants
You don’t have the money for an exotic holiday? We’ve learned that if you’re unable to travel, creating a safe haven in your own home is even more crucial.
Plants are a great way to achieve this. Bring a little bit of nature inside to instantly lift your mood and bring back fond memories.
There’s a big difference between putting a few spider plants in your window and using plants to transform your home. Here are a few tips for decorating with plants.
Go bold
Did you know the majority of North American indoor plants are natives to the Global South? This is because houseplants have been selected for their ability thrive in warm climates. Plants that require winter would not be sold indoors, and people would have to live with an empty pot for several months.
You can choose from hundreds of houseplants to create a vacation-like feeling. Choose plants you like, rather than researching their origins. What makes you think of summer paradise? What about a palm that has arching fronds or a monstera with bold, designer-like leaves? Is it a monstera with designer-like, bold leaves? Bird of paradise with a fan shape or a spiky Dracaena? Calatheas, crotons and other plants with colorful leaves can give a tropical feel to your space.
Don’t buy plants based on the label. Google the light requirements of a plant to determine if it will thrive in your home. If they do not thrive, move them away from windows. Consider adding a humidifier if you have several tropical plants grouped together in one room to simulate the humidity they would experience at home and to give your rainforest ambiance.
Big
You might feel tempted to buy smaller plants on a tight budget. If you want to transform the appearance of your room, a few large plants will do it better than a thousand tiny ones.
While it’s nice to have plants of all sizes, if your goal is to buy larger plants, you may end up with smaller plants as well. This can happen from rooted pups, cuttings made from leaves that fell off or through exchanges. Plant lovers love to exchange cuttings and will give them to others who are also plant enthusiasts. Take care of the large plants and you will see that small plants will follow.
Shop at the big-box stores if your budget is tight. Home Depot and Lowe’s offer a wide selection of large plants at reasonable prices. Look for plants not at their best. You might be able talk the clerk into a lower price if the plant has yellow or drooping leaves. Then, nurse the plant to health. You can also search for plant groups on Facebook and look out for sales and trades at low prices.
Use a staggered style
It’s certainly practical to place a few plants near a window. If you want your room to look balanced and lush, stagger the plants. Hang vining plants near the tops or windows whenever possible. Leaves that trail down on a wall can add some color.
Plants can be added to rooms and corners where there is no natural light. It is important to give them sunlight. You can place the plants on carts so that you can move them to the sun at least once a week. Add a grow-light next to them. You can relax in your decorated space, or entertain guests, by returning the plants to the corner, turning off the grow light, and being surrounded with greenery.
